How much paint do you need? Enter the size of your walls or surfaces, choose the type of paint and the number of coats — we’ll estimate the litres and can sizes for you.
This is an estimate. Real coverage depends on the product, the surface and how it is applied — check the product data sheet or ask us before ordering.
How the estimate works
Litres needed = area (m²) × number of coats ÷ coverage (m² per litre). We add 10% extra for waste and touch-ups unless you untick it. For example, 60 m² of wall with 2 coats of house paint at about 10 m² per litre needs about 12 litres, or about 13.2 litres with 10% extra.
Tips for an accurate estimate
- Measure each wall or surface and subtract large doors and windows.
- Rough, porous or new surfaces (fresh concrete, bare wood) use more paint than smooth, sealed surfaces.
- Primers, epoxies and floor coatings are applied thicker, so they cover less area per litre.
- For industrial and marine coatings, the right coverage depends on the required film thickness — check the product data sheet or ask us.
Frequently asked questions
How much paint do I need for one room?
A typical bedroom of 4 × 4 m with 2.7 m high walls has about 43 m² of wall. With 2 coats of house paint (about 10 m² per litre) that is roughly 9–10 litres including a little extra — about 2.5 gallons. Use the calculator above for your exact room.
How many coats of paint should I apply?
Most decorative paints need 2 coats for an even colour. Protective systems for steel usually use a primer, a mid-coat and a topcoat. Ask us for the right system for your job.
